Press Release – Sponge Kitchens Beckenham Celebrates 80th Birthday
Sponge Kitchens Beckenham celebrated 80 years as a family run bakery this weekend. Founded in 1938, just before the Second World War, Sponge Kitchens is a well-established family bakery consisting of three retail outlets and two craft bakeries. Sponge Kitchens are situated in Beckenham, Hayes and Downham. The bakery and cake businesses are now run by James Stewart, 3rd generation grandson of the Founder of Sponge Kitchens, which supplies birthday and wedding cakes for Beckenham, Hayes, Downham, Croydon, Orpington, Bexley, Keston and Morden.
On Saturday 15 December 2018 Sponge Kitchens became the focal point of jubilance and admiration, celebrating 80 years of serving the community. With so many stories of established business struggling and closing during these times of uncertainty, it is a testament of real determination and strength that Sponge Kitchens is now celebrating its 80th Birthday.
In celebration, and to mark the occasion, Beckenham’s local MP Colonel Bob Stewart had arrived to congratulate James Stewart on his magnificent achievements. He and customers also had a first chance to view the spectacular cake that was designed by the Head Cake Designer Zahir of the actual Sponge Kitchens building itself. Zahir has won many awards for his creations in the past, and this was no exception! The intricate and precise details of the building were breath-taking, and consisted details of the coffee shop, bakery, a window display with glass lighting and wedding cakes and not forgetting the fantastic external lighting. Customers were astounded by this cake, which had received the highest number of appreciation all over social media. However, everyone who came by were also treated to some free cakes, a goody bag and vouchers to mark this special occasion.
